A
WREATH MADE OF CELERY
“They
(train) to get a crown that will not last.”
I Corinthians 9:25
A
highlight for athletes and spectators in Athens for the 2004 Olympic Games was
visiting the ancient Greek stadiums and historical ruins.
Each day hundreds of visitors climbed to the top of the Acropolis to
pose for pictures in front of the Parthenon.
And thousands of fans filled the stands of the original Athens Olympic
stadium to watch the finish of the men’s marathon.
Multitudes
of guests also traveled an hour outside of Athens to visit ancient Corinth. It
was here the apostle Paul once lived, worked, and ministered to the Corinthian
people. Paul was a Hebrew-a Roman
citizen who lived among the Greeks and studied their culture. He used
practical language and life-related examples to reach the Corinthians. That is
why he chose to include multiple sports analogies in his letters to them. As
evidenced by the stone starting blocks that once sent star runners racing
around a track through the city and can still be seen today, the Corinthians
of Paul’s day were zealous about sport competition.
Unlike
the Athenians, who gave olive leaf wreaths to their sports champions, the
officials of the games of Corinth give winning athlete wreath-crowns made of
celery. That is why Paul wrote, “Everyone
who competes in the games goes into strict training.
They do it to get a crown that will not last; but we do it to get a
crown that will last forever” (I Corinthians 9:25).
Paul
understood that a celery wreath would cause someone to feel heroic for a
moment, but it would be useless in a few hours.
Training for that temporary wreath has some value, but the big prize
Paul talked about is the crown that
will last forever. As Christians, that’s what we’re training to win.
